I have Aspergers and realized that the main reason I feel stressed looking at people's faces is because people have incongruent faces! Many Aspies are sensitive to facial expressions and body language and when your face and body don't match up with your words, it is confusing and distressing. Chase Hughes' book provides not just the knowledge I needed to understand the dissonance, but also a compassionate frame to understand why the dissonance occurs. It is helping to slowly reduce my social anxiety around people and fostering more curiosity and empathy.
